If GATE is all about pursuing M. Tech, then what about life after M. Tech....what are its prospects?

M. Tech not only renders expertise in a given field but opens the gate for bright career opportunities. M. Tech candidates have a good scope in both the government sector and the private sector such as the MNCs. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., National Thermal Power Corporation, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd, Damodar Valley Corporation, Railway Recruitment Board, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., SAIL, ISRO etc. are names which sound quite interesting as far as employment is concerned. Who would not want to get into any of these, provided he/she is given a chance? Thanks to the Human Resource Development Ministry, very recently (since 2011) PSUs in India have started accepting GATE scores and are recruiting M. Tech candidates at a large scale.

This is only one side of the story.

Another very interesting scope of the GATE exam is that if you are interested in pursuing Ph. D. after M. Tech, then you are eligible for admission to not only Indian universities but also international universities via your GATE score.

Two such universities are the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU). Singapore is an expensive place to live in but education at the above mentioned universities is not very expensive and they also offer scholarships.  For instance the National University of Singapore offers scholarships such as...

1.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA) Graduate Fellowship at Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology Centre (which entitles a student for a stipend of A monthly stipend of S$3,200, his/her tuition fees and allowance of up to $12,000 to cover his/her research expenses)

2.Lee Kong Chian Graduate Scholarships (which are open to students of any country who enrol to pursue any of the university’s Ph.D. programmes. Also students get monthly stipends of S$3,300; apart from tuition fees, examination fees etc.)

Both the scholarships are valid for 1 year and are subject to renewal based on the students’ academic performance.

Similarly, scholarships offered by the Nanyang Technological University Singapore for international students involve...

A*STAR Graduate Scholarship, the Nanyang President’s Graduate Scholarship, the NTU Research Scholarship, the Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) and the Singapore – MIT Alliance (SMA3) Graduate Fellowship at Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology Centre.

Thus it can be concluded that whatever be your dream, whether a highly paid job at some esteemed public sector undertaking or a Doctor of Philosophy from some good international university, GATE is the route to take.  There is no specific ‘key’ to achieve all these. All you need is hard work and a good percentile (above 90 for the mentioned universities) at the end of the year.
